Canton
Switzerland, a federal state, is divided into 26 cantons. They are the states that originally united in 1848 to form the Confederation (Confoederatio Helvetica), to which they relinquished part of their sovereignty. As I'm here longer, I understand more and more the role that they play in governing - and how things (laws, immigration procedures, linguistic policies, holidays, and more) vary from canton to canton.
One thing I notice, and like, is how cantonal colors show up in shutters. For example, Vaud's green and white and Fribourg's black and white are seen below.
